Folk singer brings Americana vocals to Adler Center

Chicago singer-songwriter Heather Styka will perform at the David Adler Music and Arts Center Sunday, March 18, at 3 p.m. to celebrate Libertyville's Fine Arts Month.

Combining elements of folk, Americana, and alt-country, Styka's crooning draws inspiration from Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as Shawn Colvin and Eva Cassidy. Styka combines the lyrical intricacy of folk with a catchy, melodic pop sensibility and the grit of classic country in songs that are smart and disarming.

She is currently releasing her fifth full-length studio album, "North," which was recorded with Danish backing band The Sentimentals. Visit heatherstyka.com.

Styka's March 18 show marks the much-anticipated return of folk music to the David Adler Music and Arts Center. In the 1970s, the Libertyville School of Folk and Old Time Music began using the Adler Estate for a series of folk music classes. The Libertyville School of Folk and Old Time Music then became a part of the David Adler Music and Arts Center in 1983.

"I grew up in the Chicago area and have always been very strongly interested in Chicago's architectural history," Styka said. "I'm excited to play at the Adler Center among that history."

Styka blends classic sensibilities with catchy contemporary melodies. Her style "combines the influences of a fragile Irish air, the warm effervescence of upbeat Americana, soulful country, and mournful blues," Folk Words reviewer Tim Carroll said. "Her voice ensures these songs hit that place in your chest where emotions reside."

Tickets may be purchased online at www.adlercenter.org or by calling (847) 367-0707. Early booking is recommended, as seating in the Adler Center Ballroom is limited.
