Jhingan dropped from 8th District GOP primary
Republican congressional candidate Vandana Jhingan has been removed from the March 20 GOP primary ballot in the 8th Congressional District, leaving fellow Schaumburg resident Jitendra "JD" Diganvker as the party's likely challenger of Democratic incumbent Raja Krishnamoorthi in November.
An objection filed by Schaumburg resident Steven Anderson alleged that a number of signatures on Jhingan's nominating petition belonged to people who live outside the district or are not registered to vote, said Ken Menzel, general counsel of the Illinois State Board of Elections.
A second objection alleged improper circulation of the petition, Menzel added.
Through a combination of the two objections, Jhingan fell below the minimum number of signatures needed and was removed from the ballot. An appeal was denied this week.
Jhingan could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday on whether she would further challenge the ruling.
Jhingan, who describes herself as an Indian-American immigrant, community activist, businesswoman and media host, announced her candidacy in early December.
Diganvker, who describes himself as a businessman, immigrant and community volunteer, announced his candidacy in mid-November.
The 8th District is roughly centered in Schaumburg and includes parts of northwest Cook, northeast DuPage and northeast Kane counties.
