Walk a Mile in My Shoes benefit moves indoors due to snow
Wayside Cross Ministries' Walk a Mile in My Shoes benefit walk on Saturday, Feb. 10, was snowed out by Friday's winter storm.
The 12th annual one-mile event was set for 9 a.m. from and back to First Presbyterian Church's Harkness Family Center in Aurora.
Rebecca Monrean, Wayside manager of church/donor development, said the event was canceled - for the first time - out of safety concerns for walkers.
Guest speakers and a pancake breakfast went ahead as planned. Speakers were Monrean, Chuck Nelson, Aurora deputy mayor; and Heather Michael, shift supervisor, Wayside's Lifespring Ministry, a transitional living center for women and children. Rev. Jeff Moore, First Presbyterian pastor, gave an invocation.
In addition to Lifespring, the walk benefits Wayside's Urban Youth Ministry. It offers free programs for children including a summer camp, winter program and a summer baseball league.
Continuing a long-standing tradition, about 75 Aurora University softball and baseball student athletes were on hand to lead the walk. Adam Stevens, baseball coach, said the athletes raised about $2,000 to $3,000 for Wayside.
