Kane County Clerk's Office offers tips on Valentine's Day weddings

Valentine's Day is a popular time of year for couples to get married, and Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham recommends that Kane County couples apply soon for a marriage license if they plan to get married on or near the Valentine's Day holiday.

"Every year, many couples choose to get married on or near Valentine's Day, and I encourage couples who are planning to get married in early to mid-February to come to the clerk's office today to apply for a marriage license. Our friendly staff at the clerk's office will help you complete the application for a marriage license and help you check that item off your list of wedding preparations," Cunningham said.

In order to get for a marriage license, couples must appear together at the Kane County Clerk's Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Bldg. B, Geneva, present valid identification, including proof of age, complete and sign the marriage license application, and pay the $32 application fee, cash only.

The clerk's office processes applications for marriage licenses from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing in order to allow enough time to complete an application.

Marriage licenses are issued to the couple after the application is completed in the clerk's office. Licenses are valid beginning the following calendar day after being issued and are valid for 60 days.

Under Illinois law, only eligible persons can marry. Both partners must be 18 years of age or older, and they cannot be blood relatives or already be legally married to someone else or each other.

Applicants who have divorced within the last six weeks must provide a certified copy of a divorce decree upon applying for a marriage license. Applicants who were widowed within the last 6 weeks must provide a certified copy of the death certificate.
