Classes were key to officiating skills

There definitely is a shortage of high school officials as identified in a Guest View on Monday, Jan. 29.

But applying to be an official, paying the fee and taking the test isn't enough to guarantee success and satisfaction. I started refereeing high school boys football 15 years ago.

Yes, I am one of the few women football officials in Illinois. I had the opportunity to take a class when I started to learn how to officiate football. I believe that class made the difference in helping me to stay in the avocation. Officiating has opened so many doors for me and has afforded me so many opportunities I never would have had.
