Sled hockey a big hit with its fans
Falcons White defender David Michael slid across the ice, trying to block Falcons Black attacker Ethan Burkhart's shot on goal during the sled hockey game in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse at Lake Forest College Jan. 28.
Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association players played a rugged brand of hockey on their ice sleds during the eighth annual "The Sleds Are Coming" event.
The event is held to bring community exposure to GLASA and showcase its sled hockey program. Proceeds from the game help finance the program.
"This is our eighth year. It's where all our players come together and showcase their talents. The community cheers them on and really learns about the sport of sled hockey and the athletes that we have on our Falcons GLASA team," said Cindy Housner, executive director of GLASA. "The stands are packed and they look forward to it every year."
The game features five-on-five action with players strapped to ice sleds battling and bumping each other for possession of the puck and the right to streak down the ice for a shot on goal.
"This is fantastic. I love the sport. The main purpose behind this is to give exercise and activities for people that are less fortunate," said player David Michael of Round Lake, before fitting into his ice sled and racing onto the ice.
