Kane County Farm Bureau to host 17th annual shopping spree for food pantries

2018 is a time to celebrate the abundance of fresh and nutritious food available to consumers at affordable prices. The average American household spends less than 10 percent on of their disposable income on food, which is the lowest of any country.

The foundation of our well-being as a society depends upon the domestic production of food. Farmers and ranchers provide abundant, nutritious food supply throughout the year.

In recognition of this achievement, Kane County Farm Bureau will host its 17th annual Food Check-Out "Challenge", a shopping spree to benefit local food pantries, at the Batavia Jewel-Osco on Randall Road at Main Street, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9.

The public is invited to come watch Kane County Board member Theresa Barriero and Elburn Village President Jeffrey Walter race to collect food to help restock the shelves of two area food pantries.

The pantries they have chosen to represent are Elburn Food Pantry and Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry in Aurora. All of the groceries collected during the 5-plus minute spree are then purchased by the farm bureau and donated to respective pantries.

Through this and other recent hunger relief efforts including Harvest for ALL and related Million Meal Challenge, Kane County Farm Bureau members have donated the equivalent of more than 1.75 million meals to area food pantries.
