Jacobs celebrates Senior Night by beating Dundee-Crown
It was certainly a memorable night for Jacobs senior 170-pounder Reese Wiggins.
Wiggins, wrestling in the last match of the evening, celebrated Senior Night by pinning Dundee-Crown's Jordan Lescaleet in 5:17.
Wiggins was one of the key reasons the Golden Eagles cruised past their District 300 rival 45-22 in Fox Valley Conference action in Algonquin Thursday night.
"I was in the right mindset and prepared to wrestle tonight but I got off to a slow start," said Wiggins. "I was wrestling too much on the defensive in the first two periods but I had enough energy to get the pin late in the third period. Senior Night was a very special night. I am pushing hard in the weight room with extra work. I want to be ready for the regionals in a couple weeks."
Jacobs coach Gary Conrad was impressed with Wiggins' efforts.
"Reese wrestled very well and it was a good way to end Senior Night," said Conrad. "He is a scrappy wrestler and he finished strong with a pin."
Other pins garnered by the Golden Eagles were earned by Tanner Ward (106), Justin Peters (120), Jake Harrier (126) and Johnny Ridle (145).
Jacobs (14-5, 5-2), which won 8 of 11 matches wrestled on the mats, received wins by decisions from Cole Patrician (152), Ryan Golnick (182) and Kevin Schultz (195).
Ryan Dykes (220) compiled a win by forfeit for the Golden Eagles.
"I was really happy with the way we wrestled tonight," said Conrad. "It was a great night for the seniors who have worked so hard. This group has really progressed as the season has gone on. It has been a long journey and we are just starting to get back into wrestling shape after the Christmas break. I am looking forward to the regionals. We are in a tough regional with DeKalb, Hononegah and Huntley. We hope to get six or seven kids to sectionals."
The visiting Chargers (13-11, 2-5) registered 3 wins on the mats.
Freshman Tom Hernandez (113), in his first varsity match, Brandon Rico (132) and Colin Mays (138) posted victories by decision.
Miguel Guitirez (160) and Isiah Ziegler (285) won by forfeit.
"Brandon Rico, Tommy Hernandez, in his first varsity match, and Colin Mays all wrestled well," said Dundee-Crown coach Tim Hayes. "I liked the way Isaac Mayer wrestled and competed at 106 even though he lost. He has a good outlook on wrestling and is willing to learn. He has a good future at Dundee-Crown. Overall we wrestled sloppy and made Jacobs look a lot better than they are. Bottom line, we can wrestle much better as a team. We have no excuses for the way we wrestled tonight."
