Local photographer opens exhibit at Brushwood Gallery

Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods will present "A Subtle Beauty: The Landscape of Lake County, Illinois," featuring the work of local photographer John Wylie. An opening reception will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14. The exhibit will run through Feb. 21. Admission is free.

Landscape artists often overlook the Midwest. While perhaps generally not as dramatic as that of other parts of the country, there is a subtle beauty to the Midwest landscape, and it rewards those who spend time observing it.

This is especially true of Lake County's open lands. A notable photographer from the Lake County area, John Wylie will present his ongoing project to record that beauty. Wylie's hope is that having seen these photographs, viewers will take the time to enjoy the grace and quiet beauty of Lake County's prairies, wetlands, lakes and fields.

Wylie's work will also be featured in the Center for Humans and Nature's winter 2018 issue of Minding Nature, a journal that explores conservation values and the practice of ecological citizenship.

Free copies of Minding Nature will be handed out at the exhibition's opening reception Jan. 14. Learn more at humansandnature.org.

At the opening reception, renowned author and naturalist Joel Greenberg will join photographer John Wylie for a journey through the history of Chicago region landscapes.

Greenberg will illuminate how these lands changed over the course of 300 years in his talk, "On Contested Ground."

This program is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Chicago Community Trust.

The Brushwood Center Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1-3 p.m. Sundays. Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods is at 21850 N. Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods. Visit brushwoodcenter.org.
