CLC students have impressive showing at literary competition

College of Lake County students won five awards at the 2017 Illinois Skyway Conference Writers' Festival and Writing Competition, held Nov. 16 at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights.

Richelle Brinkley, a student from Waukegan, won first place in the drama category for her piece "Makeup," which involves a young woman struggling with pressure to act traditionally feminine.

Charlene Walkanoff of Beach Park won first place in poetry for her piece "Factory Family."

The competition also featured works of fiction and creative nonfiction.

The CLC students were up against the other eight community colleges in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference, which includes Elgin Community College, Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove and McHenry County College in Crystal Lake.
