MLS expansion LAFC adds Egypt's Gaber on loan from FC Basel
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Egyptian defender Omar Gaber will join the MLS expansion Los Angeles Football Club on loan from Switzerland's FC Basel.
LAFC announced the one-year loan Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Gaber played for LAFC coach Bob Bradley with the Egyptian national team. Gaber was a key part of the current Egyptian team headed to the World Cup next summer.
After six professional seasons in Egypt, Gaber joined Swiss powerhouse Basel last season. He has made 17 appearances for the defending Swiss Super League champions.
Gaber joins Mexican wing Carlos Vela as the only prominent players signed by LAFC. The roster will be filled out considerably by the MLS expansion draft Dec. 12.
LAFC will begin play as MLS' 23rd franchise in March in their brand-new Banc of California Stadium in downtown Los Angeles.
