Vernon Hills dentists join in Illinois Dentists Salute initiative

On Nov. 10, the dental office of Duffy and Kwiatt Dental Associates in Vernon Hills opened its doors to provide free dental care to military veterans in need.

As part of the Illinois Dentists Salute initiative, sponsored by the Illinois State Dental Society, member dentists around the state volunteered their time and staff to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.

Neglected dental needs cause unbearable pain, difficulty eating, and life threatening infections for our veterans. This problem is widespread, and the treatment is underfunded - or not funded at all.

Through the Illinois Dentists Salute program, Illinois veterans were eligible to receive a complimentary dental exam at participating dental offices in their area on Nov. 10-11.

Participating dentists provided treatment free of charge, focusing on cleanings, restorations and extractions.

"Most of our brave veterans return home to discover that they do not qualify for any government coverage for dental services unless they are 100 percent disabled, a POW, or the dental issue is service-related, said Dr.'s Duffy and Kwiatt.

Dr. Duffy and Dr. Kwiatt's office treated 9 veterans and provided exams, X-rays, cleanings, and extractions.

"Our veterans deserve a debt of gratitude and respect for their service to our country. It was truly an honor to provide them with much-needed dental care. Each one was so grateful."
