Girls volleyball: Fremd wins Grayslake North Invite

Two days after clinching a tie for the Mid-Suburban West championship, Fremd's girls volleyball team added another championship to its resume.

Coach Curt Pinley's Vikings raised their record to 21-7 with a 5-0 sweep at the Grayslake North Invite on Saturday.

The Vikings won all their matches in two sets, defeating Zion-Benton, Mundelein, Deerfield, Grayslake North and Deerfield again for the title 25-6, 25-11.

The most points Fremd gave up in any set was 21 against Mundelein. No one else scored more than 19 against the Vikes, who will host Libertyville on Monday and Hersey on Thursday for the Mid-Suburban League championship.

Maine West Pumpkin: Hersey bounced back after a tough loss to Highland Park (19-25, 25-14, 26-28) in pool play to win its final four matches for the championship of the Silver division.

The Huskies (23-6) won two-set matches over Riverside Brookfield (25-11 25-19), Maine East (25-22, 25-10), Maine West (25-16 25-15) and Palatine (25-22, 25-23).

Kati Kaburov (37 kills), Amy Morgan (32), Juliette Vandenherik (13 kills), Hayley Martin (13 kills), Janine Boyan (120 and Alessia Olhava (8 kills) led the attack set by Olhava (67) and Emma Strowzewski (31).

Julia Coniglio led the back row with 65 digs followed by Olhava (43), Kaburov (41), Morgan (40), Molly Twohig (28) and Strowzewski (26).

Vandenherik led with 11 blocks while Kaiya Eshoo and Olhava each served 8 aces.

"Our goal after we lost our first match to Highland Park was to win four straight and get back on a roll," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. " Our team did just that. We played some great volleyball today."

• Maine West went 3-2 in its own invite, to finish 11th out of the 24 teams.

The Warriors (20-13) defeated Evanston (25-19, 17-25, 25-18) and Resurrection (27-25, 25-17) on Saturday with its only loss to MSL East champion Hersey.

• Conant (7-21) earned its win at the invite with a 27-25 21-25, 25-16 victory over Hoffman Estates, which received 77 digs from Ashley Poland and 35 assists from Kathleen Gueco in the invite.

Glenbard East Invite: Barrington (20-13) was 14th and Schaumburg 15th at the 24-team event in Lombard.

The Fillies went 2-3 with two-set wins over Wheaton Warrenville South and Providence.

MSL West co-champion Schaumburg (17-11) was also 2-3, notching a two-set win over West Aurora and three-set triumph over Providence.

Elgin Invite: Leyden placed fifth out of six teams, getting its win over Elgin Academy 25-17, 25-15. Leading the Eagles were Kim Silva (12 kills), Destiny Corral (25 kills, 4 aces), Victoria Schulmeister (8 kills, 2 aces), Bea Verin (35 digs, 2 aces), Camryn McGee (15 kills, 5 aces) and Andrea Horvath (73 assists, 4 aces).
