Girls volleyball: Lakes is runner-up at Antioch's Lonergan tourney
Girls volleyball
at Antioch: Lakes finished 4-1, falling to tournament champion Palatine in three sets in the decisive matchup in the Sixth Annual Elaine Lonergan Memorial Tournament.
The Eagles (24-3) counted two-set wins over Belvidere North, Lake Forest, Hampshire and Antioch.
Against Palatine, Lakes won the first set 26-24 before dropping the next two, 22-25 and 11-15.
The host Sequoits placed third, with wins against Zion-Benton, Deerfield and Belvidere North. Antioch (20-11-1) fell to both Lakes and Palatine in three sets.
Discovery invite: In the two-day tournament hosted by Glenbrook North and New Trier, Grayslake Central went 3-2 to improve to 20-11 and picked up other season milestones as well, as Cassidy Beshel got her 200th kill and Lauren LaBeck dished out her 500th assist.
The Rams defeated Buffalo Grove 25-19, 26-24 for ninth place. Beshel finished with 51 kills, 4 aces and 3 blocks. Other contributors for GC included Amber Moser (20 kills, 2 blocks, 4 aces), Kate Bullman (16 kills, 7 blocks), Michelle Maraist (13 kills, 6 aces), LaBeck (108 assists, 3 aces, 5 blocks) and Abby Marassa (40 digs, 9 aces).
Stevenson (15-11) also went 3-2, getting 35 kills from Sophie Sorenson and 62 digs from Chloe Robinson.
Wauconda (16-14, 3-2 tourney) beat Stevenson 25-20, 25-20. The Bulldogs got 68 digs from Jane Sakowicz, 29 kills from Riley Aldrich and 19 kills apiece from Erika Kraml and Nicole Carazas.
