5 things to do this weekend in the suburbs

An annual horse celebration in Wheaton, a scarecrow fest in St. Charles and an afternoon of seasonal family fun in Rosemont give suburbanites lots of reasons to venture out this weekend. Here are five ideas. For others, go to dailyherald.com/calendar.

<h3 class="breakHead">St. Charles Scarecrow Festival</h3>

See more than 150 handcrafted scarecrows at the 32nd Annual St. Charles Scarecrow Festival at Main and 4th streets and along the riverfront in downtown St. Charles. The event also includes music, the Autumn on the Fox arts and crafts show, a carnival, a petting zoo, Sunday bike ride, food and more. <h3 class="breakHead">Joseph Zettelmaier's 'The Man-Beast'</h3>

Haunting drama: Get in the Halloween spirit early as Joseph Zettelmaier concludes his horror trilogy with a werewolf tale titled "The Man-Beast," about a mysterious animal that has terrorized the French countryside. The First Folio production - which follows Zettelmaier's "Frankenstein"-inspired "The Gravedigger" and the Bram Stoker riff "Dr. Seward's Dracula" - is at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St., Oak Brook. $25-$44. Catch the hard-rocking Blue Öyster Cult, known for such hits as "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" and "Burnin' for You," on stage this weekend in the suburbs. Fall Fest: Take the kids or grandkids to MB Financial Park's Family Fall Fest, which includes bouncy houses, pumpkin decorating, balloon sculpting, magic acts and face painting until 5 p.m. at 5501 Park Place, Rosemont. The Beatles tribute band Kaleidoscope Eyes plays at 1 p.m. and Rosie and The Rivets plays hits from the 1950s and '60s from 4 to 6 p.m. Take a free horse-drawn hayrides until 4 p.m. Free. mbparkatrosemont.com. 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.

Celebrate the majesty of horses at the Danada Fall Festival, at the Danada Equestrian Center, 3S507 Naperville Road, Wheaton. The fest features a parade of breeds, equestrian performances, hayrides, pony rides, face painting, grooming demonstrations, educational displays, food and more. Free; fees for some activities.
