Hossa, Chicago Blackhawks await NHL ruling on injury relief

NHL officials have referred Marian Hossa "to a specialist for an independent evaluation" to determine if the Blackhawks can be granted long-term injured reserve relief this season, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told the Daily Herald on Tuesday.

The Hawks announced in June that Hossa will not play this season due to a skin condition, and the side effects created by the medication to treat it. Hossa's contract calls for him to make just $1 million for the next four seasons, but his cap hit is $5.275 million.

Said Daly on the evaluation: "(It) has been conducted, but we have not yet received the doctor's report."

Daly added that a ruling should be made before the beginning of the regular season, which is Oct. 4. The Hawks' opener is the next day when they host Pittsburgh.
