When the fire department arrived at 3:47 p.m., they found a two-story home with smoke coming from the roof area. The fire was contained to the kitchen area on the first floor.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but there was smoke and heat damage in most of the interior. The cause of the fire is unknown but doesn't appear suspicious, according to a news release. Estimated damages are in excess of $50,000.

The Elgin Fire Department is investigating.
