Help create a mosaic to set a world record

Setting a world record with the creation of a colorful mosaic design made of reusable cups is a goal of the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage during the Viva Mexico Independence Day Festival in downtown West Chicago.

The center is seeking the help of the West Chicago community and those attending the festival in creating the mosaic from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, on Main Street in downtown West Chicago.

The idea was developed as a way to celebrate the connection between railroad history and Mexican heritage during the annual festival that marks Mexican Independence Day.

The mosaic will be constructed from more than 11,700 reusable cups with colorful lids that will form the design along the 100 block of Main Street. The design features a boxcar train surrounded by a colorful Mexican motif, and was chosen to reflect West Chicago's history as being the first Illinois community created by the first railroad junction.

Residents and visitors are invited to take part in the creation of the mosaic on Saturday and/or the disassembling of the mosaic on Sunday by signing up at signupgenius.com/go/5080845aba62aa2f85-west.

The mosaic will remain on Main Street for the duration of the festival. The Mosaic World Record attempt is sponsored by Republic Bank and People Made Visible.
