Documentary screening at Vernon Area Library

The Nuclear Energy Information Service will sponsor a showing of the acclaimed documentary "Into Eternity" at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at the Vernon Area Public Library, 300 Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire.

The film concerns the High-Level Radioactive Waste facility being constructed in Finland.

The viewing will be followed by a Q-and-A and discussion featuring Al Hill, Mayor of Zion, a town that, since the decommissioning of the Zion Power Plant, has suffered the presence of 61 casks of High-Level Radioactive Waste on the Lake Michigan shore. Each cask holds radioactivity that will last a minimum of 100,000 years.

In addition, the office of U.S. Representative Brad Schneider may send a representative to speak about federal legislation to compensate communities that are dealing with such orphaned waste.

The event is free. For information, email NEIS@NEIS.org, visit NEIS.org, or call (773) 342-7650.
