Auditions for Schaumburg Youth Choir Aug. 20 & 27

The Schaumburg Youth Choir will hold auditions for high school and college students for its 5th season on Sunday, August 20 and Sunday, August 27 at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts.

Since forming in January, 2014 the skilled 15-member SYC (Schaumburg Youth Choir) has performed at the Schaumburg Boomers Stadium, the United Center for the Chicago Bulls, and at Chicago's Symphony Center for the Schaumburg Youth Orchestra's 25th anniversary gala concert.

This season, the choir will present a season of concerts at the Prairie Center, including the Presto! Holiday Concert with the Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra on December 16.

The choir is directed by Michael Van Camp, who studied at Carnegie Mellon University, earning both a Master's degree and Advanced Music Studies certificate in conducting. He has also served as Interim Director of Choirs at Fremd High School in Palatine and Director of Choirs at Conant High School in Hoffman Estates.

The SYC is open to high school and college students, ages 15-22. High school members must be enrolled in their school chorus program. Students auditioning for the choir must prepare a solo aria or art song (students without a prepared solo will be asked to sing a short popular folk song). The audition will also include a vocal range assessment and sight reading.

The fee to participate in the choir for the 2017-18 season is $175. Rehearsals will be held Sunday evenings, 7 pm - 9 pm at the Prairie Center, located at 201 Schaumburg Ct., Schaumburg, IL. Members of the choir will be eligible to receive the Prairiesong Scholarhip, valued at up to $500.

Auditions are by appointment only and can be scheduled online by visiting www.schaumburgyouthchoir.org.
