Garden a learning experience at Mundelein school
Lori Northup, Fremont Elementary School's healthy minds teacher, has been busy this summer tending to the school's vegetable gardens.
Tuesday morning, a handful of students helped her harvest cucumbers, eggplant, squash, broccoli and kale at the kindergarten through second grade school in Mundelein.
Northup said having a garden at the school is a perfect way to introduce students to healthy food alternatives. Once the new school year begins next week, students will still have the chance to help in the gardens. Northup also runs a Taste Test program during the school year when students can sample vegetables.
Most vegetables harvested from the gardens are given to the Fremont Township Food Pantry, where many senior citizens and low-income residents benefit from the donation.
