White Sox get Brewers prospect Cordell in trade for Swarzak

The rebuilding Chicago White Sox continued trading veteran players for minor-league prospects on Wednesday, sending 31-year-old relief pitcher Anthony Swarzak to the Milwaukee Brewers for 25-year-old outfielder Ryan Cordell.

FanRag first reported the trade on Tuesday, and Comcast SportsNet's Dan Hayes first reported the Sox were getting Cordell. The White Sox confirmed the deal Wednesday morning.

The White Sox signed Swarzak to a minor-league deal in late January, and the right-hander made the 25-man roster in spring training.

Swarzak, who is on a one-year, $900,000 contract this season, was 4-3 with a 2.23 ERA in 41 appearances for the Sox. He recorded his first major-league save Monday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Cordell batted .284 with 18 doubles, 5 triples, 10 home runs, 45 RBI, 49 runs scored and 9 stolen bases in 68 games with Class AAA Colorado Springs this season.

Rated by MLB.com as the No. 17 prospect in the Brewers' farm system, Cordell has been on the disabled list since June 27 with a strained back.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder is expected to be sidelined "a couple more weeks," according to Milwaukee general manager David Stearns.

The White Sox made a roster move before tonight's interleague game against the Cubs at Guaranteed Rate Field, calling up right-handed pitcher Jake Petricka. The 29-year-old Petricka made five rehab appearances with Class AAA Charlotte after being placed on the disabled list on June 29 with a right elbow strain.
