Literacy Volunteers needs tutors for adult learners
Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley needs volunteers to help Fox Valley adults learn English. A four-session tutor training workshop will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 14, 16, 21, and 23 at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.
Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley helps adults improve their English by matching them with trained volunteer tutors one to one.
Once you are trained, you meet with your student for one hour each week at a time and public location that is convenient.
Most tutors and students meet at local libraries. The program provides material and training so that anyone can be a tutor.
You don't need a second language or a teaching background to qualify.
The adult learners who are registered for the program have come from more than 40 different countries for the opportunity to provide for their families, live in safe neighborhoods, and send their children to good schools. It is estimated that there are 42,000 adults in Kane County who need to improve their English.
Last fiscal year, 226 volunteers gave 6,070 hours of tutoring to 292 adults.
Residents who are interested in registering for tutor training should visit www.lvfv.org or call/text Peg Coker at (630) 584-4428.
