Bring the family for 'Messin' Around in the Dirt Day'

Children can get to know nature and learn through playing at a "Messin' Around in the Dirt Day" kid event in Aurora.

Join University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners for free interactive stations on Thursday, July 27.

Drop in to The Growing Place Garden Center between 10 a.m. and noon to learn about leaves, plant parts, bees and more with fun activities. It includes a nature scavenger hunt and youth yoga.

"'Messin' Around in the Dirt' Days are fun for the whole family this summer," said Sarah Fellerer, Master Gardener program coordinator for Kane and Kendall counties. "Our volunteers have put together hands-on activities to build an understanding of plants, insects, and soil."

Working and playing in the garden and outdoors provides many benefits. It helps families get in the at least 60 minutes of activity recommended per day for children, and also can teach lessons in environmental science, nutrition, healthy living, and responsibility, as well as provide an overall respect for nature, added Fellerer.

The Growing Place is located at 2000 Montgomery Road in Aurora. The stations are open to all ages, but are designed with ages 5 to 10 in mind. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required.
