After Quintana trade, White Sox still looking to move more veterans

Just in case the Jose Quintana trade on Thursday didn't light up the "For Sale" sign at Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago White Sox general manager Rick Hahn put in his own plug before Friday night's 4-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

"We are very much open for business," Hahn said. "Yes. We've had a number of conversations leading up through the Quintana trade and since, and I suspect that a healthy pace will continue here through the coming weeks.

"We're certainly not feeling any pressure to get additional deals done, we're not going to force the issue in any instance. But if the right opportunity arises and it puts us in a better position for the long-term, we will act accordingly."

In advance of the July 31 nonwaiver deadline, the Red Sox need a third baseman after designating Pablo Sandoval for assignment Friday. They had a scout at the White Sox-Mariners game, and Todd Frazier is very much available.

"It's in the back of my mind," Frazier said. "It's way back there, though. I'm not really focused on that. Whatever happens, happens, honestly. But I know if I do get traded, it probably will be to a competitive team trying to win a playoff."

Sox lose to Mariners:

Coming out of the all-star break, the White Sox lost to Seattle 4-2 Friday night, dropping their record to 38-50.

James Shields started for the Sox and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings.

"He gave us a chance, he gave us a good chance," manager Rick Renteria said.

Leading 1-0, Shields gave up a 3-run homer to Robinson Cano in the third inning. Jean Segura scored from third base on a wild pitch in the fifth.

"I kept the team in the game, but two pitches really cost me," Shields said. "If I make my pitches right there, it's a whole different ballgame."

Injury update:

Before playing Seattle Friday, the White Sox activated infielder Tyler Saladino (back) and starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez (shoulder) off the disabled list.

Saladino started at second base against the Mariners and had an RBI double in his first at-bat.

"It's very frustrating because you don't come here to get hurt," said Saladino, who was out for almost two months. "It's part of the game but obviously when something like that happens it brings you down a little. I just kept after it and didn't really know how long it may or may not take, so stick with it. I feel pretty luck to be back out here."

Gonzalez is scheduled to start against the Dodgers Tuesday.

Robert update:

Outfield prospect Luis Robert, who signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on May 27 that included a $26 million bonus, has been out since July 4 with a left knee injury.

"He was re-examined in the last 24 hours," Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. "He seems to have fully recovered. He's going to begin the process of ramping back up his physical and baseball activities and hopefully he'll return to playing games in the DSL in a couple weeks."

In 17 games with the Dominican Summer League White Sox, the 19-year-old Robert is batting .255/.479/.392 with 1 home run, 4 RBI and 8 stolen bases.
