See fireflies create a spectacular light show at Spring Valley Nature Center

Summer might seem like an odd season to decorate the night with twinkling lights, but not if you're a Spring Valley firefly.

Firefly Fandango is set for 8:45 to 9:45 p.m., July 8, at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Families are invited to take a twilight wagon ride to view an incredible light show as the sun sets on Spring Valley. Other activities include a short discussion about fireflies and how they produce their light.

"Seeing the multitude of fireflies rising out of Spring Valley's prairie is just breathtaking," said Mary Rice, education coordinator for Spring Valley. "I remember the first time I saw fireflies at the Nature Center, and it reminded me of my childhood. They look like holiday lights."

Although it's possible to see a few fireflies in suburban backyards, Rice said it's rare to see so many at once other than in natural settings such as Spring Valley.

"Their habitats are gone," Rice said. "They need the tall grasses and open space areas to live."

Cost is $4 per person for residents and $5 per person for non-residents. Registration is required.
