Cabrera comes through in clutch as White Sox rally over Rangers

Melky Cabrera was in the right place at the right time Friday night.

Coming to the plate with runners on first and second and one out in the ninth inning, Cabrera lined a 2-run double down the right-field line to rally the White Sox to an 8-7 win over the Texas Rangers at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Coming into the game, Cabrera ranked eighth in the American League with 7 game-winning RBI.

"He gives you great at-bats in most situations," manager Rick Renteria said after the White Sox stormed back from a 7-5 deficit in the ninth. "He's a professional hitter who in certain situations kind of seems to rise to the occasion. That was just another example."

After Alen Hanson started the Sox's comeback with an RBI single. Cabrera kept the ball fair down the line against Rangers closer Matt Bush.

"We have confidence in ourselves," Cabrera said through an interpreter. "We know if we do our best, we're going to have a pretty chance to win the game and we did."

The early highlight was Jose Abreu's solo homer in the first inning off Rangers starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx. Abreu has 14 home runs for the season, but Friday's was his first at home.

Todd Frazier added 2 solo shots for the White Sox.

Girardi blames box for injury:

In Thursday night's White Sox-Yankees game, which started 2 hours and 50 minutes late due to rain, New York right fielder Dustin Fowler made his major-league debut and wound up being carted off the field in the bottom of the first inning.

Running full speed trying to catch a foul ball off the bat of Jose Abreu, Fowler slammed into the low fence down the right-field line and suffered an open rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee.

The rookie had successful surgery at Rush University Medical Center and is out for the season.

New York manager Joe Girardi said Fowler ran into an electrical box at the top of the fence.

"I'm not blaming the White Sox, but it is something that needs to be inspected," Girardi told ESPN. "It should've been padded or not put there or put lower because if the kid doesn't hit the electrical box, he might still be hurt but my guess is he doesn't rupture his patellar tendon."

The Sox said the electrical boxes hold Wi-Fi projectors, but replays indicate Fowler did not hit one.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria was concerned when he saw Fowler running so fast trying to make the catch.

"I would simply say that young man was going after the ball with tremendous vigor," Renteria said. "We all got upset that he was injured. You never want to see anybody get injured. We hope he's recovering well. I think there's just a newness probably that occurs. He probably had a lot of adrenaline going."

Tilson injured again:

Having finally recovered from a stress reaction in his right foot that caused him to miss spring training and the first three months of the season, White Sox center fielder Charlie Tilson is down with another injury.

While rehabbing his foot in Glendale, Ariz., Tilson complained of right ankle pain. Tests revealed a stress fracture of the navicular bone in the ankle. Tilson will wear a walking boot for a month and be reevaluated. Acquired in a trade from the Cardinals last July, Tilson played in one game for the Sox and tore his left hamstring.
