White Sox's Garcia sits with sore left knee

Avisail Garcia has already had one season sidetracked by injury.

In the ninth game of the 2014 season, Garcia tore up his left shoulder trying to make a diving catch in a game at Colorado.

Expected to miss the rest of the year, Garcia did manage to return in mid-August and salvage the end of the season.

In Wednesday night's game against the Yankees, Garcia foiled a pickoff attempt and slid back into first base during the seventh inning.

He had to leave the game with a sore left knee, but an MRI showed no structural damage. Garcia is hoping to return to the White Sox's lineup in a "couple of days."

"I've been in that situation before with my shoulder and it's not fun," Garcia said. "I thank God for that, just to be out a couple days. Get better and go play the game."

Garcia didn't play Thursday night against New York at Guaranteed Rate Field.

In a game that started 2 hours and 50 minutes late due to rain, the White Sox led the Yankees 4-2 in the sixth inning.

The game was marred by outfielder Dustin Fowler's serious right knee injury. Playing in his first major-league game for New York, Fowler sprinted after a Jose Abreu foul line drive in the bottom of the first inning and slammed into the right-field railing.

Fowler was carted off the field and taken to Rush University Medical Center. The rookie was diagnosed with an open rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee.

Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph, the White Sox's team physician, was scheduled to perform immediate surgery.

Garcia has been the Sox's best player over the first three months of the season. Even though he is riding an 0-for-19 slump, the 26-year-old outfielder ranks fifth in the American League with a .318 batting average.

On Sunday, Garcia is expected to be named to his first American League all-star team, and he is likely going to be the only White Sox player in Miami on July 11.

"He's making it," third baseman Todd Frazier said. "It would be a travesty if he doesn't. Avi is deserving of that, maybe even a starter."

Garcia was asked if he thinks about playing in the All-Star Game.

"I would lie to you to say no," he said. "It would mean a lot. A lot because you know how it is, you know how hard everybody works during the season, during the off-season. We never stop. I never stop, I work here for six months, take a couple of days or weeks off, and then work hard again. It's such an accomplishment and I would feel proud. Let's see what happens."

Petricka injured:

Relief pitcher Jake Petricka landed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a right elbow strain.

Petricka gave up 5 runs on 5 hits in 1 inning of work against the Yankees Wednesday night and was ejected from the game for arguing with home-plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.

The Sox recalled Juan Minaya from Class AAA Charlotte to replace Petricka.
