COD ceremony honors those killed in active duty

College of DuPage will honor Wheaton resident and Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller during a ceremony as part of a memorial tribute to students and alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice as firefighters, police officers and military service members.

The ceremony honoring Miller will be from 2 to 3:20 p.m. Thursday, July 6, on the west side of the SSG Robert J. Miller Homeland Security Education Center on campus, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The other students and alumni will have their own honorarium inside the center.

While the event is free, participants are asked to RSVP at cod.edu/memorial.

Born in 1983, Miller grew up in Wheaton, where he attended Wheaton North High School. In 2003, he joined the U.S. Army and spent 18 months completing the training and qualifications required for Special Forces. In 2007, Miller received two Army Commendation Medals for Valor for courage under fire after an eight-month deployment in Afghanistan.

Miller was killed in action in January 2008 and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in October 2010.

College of DuPage is also seeking information on former students and alumni who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty as firefighters, police officers and members of the military.

If you know of a former student or alumni who meets this criteria, contact Jose Alferez at alferezj@cod.edu or call (630) 942-2444.
