Vernon Hills clearing invasive species from ponds
Contractors have begun treating ponds in Vernon Hills for algae and invasive aquatic plants species.
Many ponds have not been treated in 20 years and have a high concentration of Eurasian Watermilfoil that chokes out native species by forming thick tangles of stems underwater and mats of vegetation at the surface.
Initial treatment will cause Watermilfoil plants to turn brown and wilt within the next week. As the plants die, that likely will cause algae blooms, which will be addressed as they occur.
