Boomers win on the road against Slammers
The Schaumburg Boomers scored a second consecutive 5-1 decision, taking the opener from the Joliet Slammers on the road on a chilly Friday night.
A cold night made for a good evening for pitchers. Schaumburg utilized a leadoff walk in the fourth to Sean Godfrey to open the scoring. Zach Weigel legged out a bunt single and with the bases unoccupied, both runners moved one station further. Seth Spivey opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Joliet tied the game against Aryton Costa in the bottom of the inning, the lone run Costa allowed in his first start. Kyle Ruchim put Schaumburg ahead for good with a 2-out double in the fifth to plate Josh Gardiner, who walked. Three runs scored in the eighth to put the game away as Gardiner and David Harris tallied RBI-singles with Kenny Towns floating a sacrifice fly.
Costa worked 6 innings in his first start, striking out 5 and allowing just the 1 run on 5 hits to earn the win. Austin Kerr and Rob McDonnell combined for the final three innings to finish out the win on the hill. Schaumburg finished with 8 hits and has posted at least eight in each of the first seven games. Weigel tallied 2 hits while Gardiner reached 3 times.
