Boys volleyball: Rolling Meadows tops Wheeling in East finale

Rolling Meadows' boys volleyball team completed its Mid-Suburban East slate with a three-set win against visiting Wheeling on Tuesday.

The Mustangs won decisively in the first set, 25-15, dropped the second 25-17 and bounced back to win the third 25-21.

Logan Reese (20-for-23 hitting, 12 kills), Max Schertler (10 kills) and Kyle Kornblum (9 kills) led the attack for Rolling Meadows.

Joe Tunzi (16 assists) and Billy Psarros (15) shared setting duties for the Mustangs, while Marc Quezada had a team-best 17 digs and Szymon Kleniuk served up 2 aces and had 10 digs.

Top performers for Wheeling (19-13, 6-4) included Michael Lechowicz (10 kills, 8-for-8 serving), Matt Schiferl (11 digs, 4 blocks, 2 aces), Kyle Bagarella (17 assists, 3 digs) and Jared Moser (7 kills, 5 digs).

Fremd d. Hoffman Estates: The host Vikings completed a runner-up finish in the MSL West by handling the Hawks 25-16, 25-22.

Aaron Peterson had team-highs of 6 kills and 3 blocks for Fremd (14-8, 8-2), and Rocco Stella and Ben Cohen had 4 kills apiece.

Alex Wysocki (9 digs) and Kaleb Scharman and Aaron Peterson (8 digs each) were strong defensively, while Scharman had a team-best 14 assists and Jacob Peterson had 10.

Hoffman Estates got a big hitting effort from Miguel Pineda (8 kills), and Alan Zapinski had a team-best 16 digs.

Buffalo Grove d. Elk Grove: The visiting Bison finished up MSL East play with a 25-16, 25-18 victory.

That leaves Buffalo Grove with a 7-3 record against its East foes, good for a second-place finish.

Chris Tsourmas (7 kills), Ian Van Wazer (5 kills, 3 aces), Brian Franz (3 kills) and Greg Schneider (18 digs, 1 ace) helped lead the Bison.

Elk Grove's top efforts were generated by Kevin Braceros (4 kills,), Mark Wickstrom (4 kills), John Duncker (29-for-29 setting, 5 assists), Carlos Leon (8 digs) and Tim Varga (4 blocks).

Palatine d. Schaumburg: The host Pirates prevailed 22-25, 25-19, 25-21 in an MSL West finale.

Johnny O'Shea (10 kills), Curtis McLennan (7) and Matt Cooper (6) led the attack for Palatine. Ben Rinella had 25 assists, while O'Shea had a team-best 17 digs and Camden Hill came up with 3 blocks.

St. Viator d. Marian Catholic: The host Lions earned a 25-16, 25-14 East Suburban Catholic Conference win to improve to 14-18 overall and 4-2 in the league. Key contributors for Viator were Jack Purcell (4 blocks, 4 kills), Ben Whalen (2 aces, 7 kills), Nick Garth (6 kills, 3 blocks) and Danny Morton (7 kills, 6 digs).

"We really controlled the net play on our end," said St. Viator coach Jimmy Neill. "We served well, and our hitting efficiency was great tonight."

Hersey d. Prospect: The MSL East champs finished a perfect run against their divisional opponents with a 25-20, 25-17 victory at Prospect.

The Huskies (28-5, 10-0) will meet Barrington in the MSL championship game next week.

Jake Mailloux had a team-best 8 kills, while Joe Nugent had 7 and Camran Saeed had 6. Christian Hong and Vince Reisel both served a pair of aces, and Reisel was 50-for-51 setting with 23 assists.

Justin Hong had a team-best 10 digs and Reisel had 9 for the Huskies.

Barrington d. Conant: The host Broncos completed an unbeaten effort against the MSL West with a 25-14, 25-23 decision.

Senior Josh Babicz had team-best efforts with 7 blocks and 10 kills. Jacob Werner had 7 kills and Connor Shoults supplied 22 assists. Sean Dolan came up with 6 blocks and 5 kills, and Stephen Wanca had a team-best 8 digs.
