Softball: Johnson's clutch single lifts Carmel past Fenwick
Flynn Johnson's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Carmel Catholic's softball team to a 5-4 win over Fenwick in nonconference action Wednesday.
Jordan Swiatkowski hit a 2-run homer for the Corsairs (16-5), and Emily Haley was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Johnson and Karina Falkstrom (double) also had 2 hits apiece. Marla Walinski pitched the final 3 innings and earned the win.
Grayslake North 6, Johnsburg 2: Sophomore pitcher Emily Mack earned her first start of the season and rolled up 8 strikeouts over seven innings to help Grayslake North get the nonconference win.
Carissa Popp led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI.
Kylie Conrad added 2 hits for the Knights, who move to 9-12 on the season.
Antioch 12, Round Lake 0 (5): Starting pitcher Stephanie Bonaguidi and Hannah Cook combined on a 5-inning no-hitter, and Jackalyn Geraty had 3 hits for the Sequoits in Northern Lake County action.
Megan Lawrence, Ashley Stephens and Carlie Gaylord added 2 hits each for Antioch.
Grant 6, Wauconda 4: Liz Schram and Erin Bengston both belted home runs to lead Grant to a Northern Lake County Conference win.
Schram had 2 hits on the day, as did Calista Warmowski and Megan Mitchell, helping Grant improve to 15-3.
Winning pitcher Megan Chapman had 3 strikeouts over 6 innings.
For Wauconda, Kayla Serio, Hayley Redmann, Sarah Ricci and Alexandra Steffens each had 2 hits. One of Redmann's hits was a home run.
Vernon Hills 5, Glenbrook North 4: Vernon Hills survived a furious Glenbrook North rally to get the win.
Glenbrook North scored 2 runs in the top of the seventh.
Quin Yuter led Vernon Hills with 3 hits, including a triple.
Jess Salerno and Meg Finerty added 2 hits apiece for the Cougars.
