Boys volleyball: Forward-thinking Barrington serves up a winner against St. Viator

A well-rounded effort Wednesday evening led Barrington to a nonconference boys volleyball victory over visiting St. Viator.

The Broncos won 25-15, 25-18 as 6-foot-6 senior middle Josh Babicz had 10 kills and 7 blocks, and libero Stephen Wanca contributed with 5 digs and a 2.2 passing ratio.

The hitting of junior outside hitter Michael O'Toole helped the home team pull away from the Lions in both sets after competitive Viator beginnings.

Barrington improved to 15-3 on the season.

"We started a little slow," said Wanca. "We weren't very vocal. We got back into it, and some of the guys, especially (senior) Jacob Werner, got vocal and got us fired up."

Danny Morton and Nick Garth each had 6 kills for the Lions (4-13).

"We serve received well, and our offense was there," said Viator coach Jimmy Neill. "But defensively, the Barrington attack and their blocking overwhelmed us."

Broncos middle Sean Dolan finished with 2 aces as he led his team on a couple of long runs, and Evan Carroll also served up an ace on middle school night in the Barrington gym.

The middle school players got to serve volleyballs over the net to the Broncos varsity players between sets, something that Babicz said he got to experience when he was an eighth-grader.

"It makes me think," said Babicz, "about our future."
