Holland, Davidson spark White Sox's win over Indians
Pitching hasn't been a problem for the Chicago White Sox in the season's early days.
Heading into Wednesday's game against the Indians at Progressive Field, the Sox ranked second in the American League with a 2.80 ERA and the bullpen was even better with a 1.33 ERA.
Those impressive numbers held up nicely as the White Sox edged Cleveland 2-1 behind a second straight quality start from Derek Holland.
The veteran lefty no longer throws as hard as he did during an eight-year run with Texas, but Holland's array of off-speed pitches have been effective.
Against the Indians, the 30-year-old starter was working on a no-hitter until Francisco Lindor led off the sixth inning with a double.
While throwing 101 pitches, Holland (1-1) pitched 6 scoreless innings and allowed 1 hit to go with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Trailing 2-0 in the eighth inning, Cleveland scored a run off Nate Jones, but with Lindor at third base and one out, the Sox's reliever struck out Edwin Encarnacion and got Jose Ramirez to groundout.
David Robertson came on in the ninth and retired the Indians in order for his first save of the season. On the trade market, Robertson is off to a fast start with 3 scoreless innings and 6 strikeouts.
The White Sox's pitching staff is up and running, but the offense is still trying to get out of the blocks.
With Tim Anderson, Melky Cabrera, Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier all off to slow starts, scoring has been a challenge for the Sox and they were 12th in the AL with 23 runs heading into Wednesday.
Frazier was 2-for-4 with a double and his first home run of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Cleveland in 10 innings, but he was scratched on Wednesday with flu-like symptoms.
Matt Davidson filled in for Frazier at third base and continued to push for more playing time.
Through the White Sox's first six games, Davidson was platooning at designated hitter with Cody Asche.
In his first start, Davidson was 2-for-3 with a triple and 3-run homer against Detroit.
After giving the Sox a chance against the Indians with a pinch-hit double in the series opener, Davidson gave the offense a needed boost Wednesday with a 2-run single in the second inning off Danny Salazar (0-1).
