Become an 1880s kid at Volkening Heritage Farm

When making travel plans this summer, don't forget to include a visit to the 19th century.

Junior Historians, a new Schaumburg Park District camp, gives children ages 10 to 12 the opportunity to embrace life in the 1880s. Three-week sessions begin June 12 and July 17 at the Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road.

As part of the camp, children will be costumed in authentic 1880s clothing. Costumes may be taken home each day and returned at the end of the session. Campers will help care for farm animals, garden, learn to sew, cook on a wood burning stove and make crafts. They also will learn historic games and play with 19th century toys.

"The best way to experience history is to completely immerse yourself as much as you can through your outfit as well as your activities," said Patricia Kennedy, farm program coordinator. "This camp will hopefully give children a deeper connection to the past and a larger interest in Schaumburg's background."

Cost of the camp is $489 for residents and $549 for non-residents. The price includes costumes and supplies.

"We're really excited," Kennedy said. "This will be a great experience for a child who likes history. I would liken it to any sports camp. It's going to be just as intense."
