No one injured in Hampshire barn fire

Authorities are investigating the cause of a Sunday fire that destroyed a more than century-old Hampshire barn.

The 7,500-square-foot structure was "fully involved in fire" when crews from the Hampshire Fire Protection District arrived at the 14N300 block of Brier Hill Road, Deputy Chief Trevor Herrmann said.

Firefighters, who responded to the call about 3:30 p.m., battled the blaze for two hours before it was brought under control, he said.

The barn only contained bales of straw, and no animals or equipment were inside at the time of the fire, Herrmann said. Nobody was injured.

Thirteen fire departments responded to the blaze to provide water because there are no fire hydrants nearby, he said. Crews remained at the scene until about 8:15 p.m.

A damage estimate was not available Sunday, though Herrmann said the barn, which dates back to the late 1800s, was a "total loss."
