Elgin man gets 15-year prison sentence for cocaine bust
March 28, 2017
An Elgin man who was arrested during a drug sting was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday.
A Kane County judge issued the sentence for 51-year-old Carlos Garcia-Perez, of the 400 block of Dwight Avenue. Officials say he arranged to sell a kilogram of cocaine to a police informant for $27,000 in 2013.
On March 23, 2013, Carpentersville police pulled over the car Garcia-Perez was a passenger in while on his way to sell the drugs. Officers found the cocaine hidden in the vehicle, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office.
Garcia-Perez was convicted Jan. 20 of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
According to Illinois law, Garcia-Perez must serve at least 75 percent of the sentence. He will receive credit for the 1,476 days he served in the Kane County jail, where he had been held since his arrest.
Garcia-Perez must also pay a fine of $46,400, the determined value of the cocaine.
