USF player cut from football team after road-rage shooting

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A University of South Florida football player who was shot during a violent road-rage incident has been cut from the team.

Coach Charlie Strong announced Tuesday that senior safety Hassan Childs had been dismissed. The 22-year-old had one more season of eligibility.

Tampa police say Childs was about a mile from the USF campus Saturday night when he twice pointed a gun at a car carrying a couple and their 3-year-old son. The man driving the car drew his own gun and fired three times. Childs was hospitalized with gunshot wounds but expected to make a full recovery.

Both Childs and the other driver have concealed weapon permits.

Childs is charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of misdemeanor marijuana possession.
