Endorsements: Gatta, Jacobs, Kain in Hawthorn District 73
In Hawthorn Elementary School District 73, six good candidates are running for three four-year terms. We endorse incumbent Louis E. Gatta, 46, who is general manager for Niles Central High School; Joseph L. Kain, 53, a financial controller; and Matt Jacobs, 41, a quality assurance analyst.
Gatta is the only incumbent among the candidates, making his experience a key asset to maintain. He has been an active board member, not afraid to question prevailing wisdom.
Kain also has intimate knowledge of the district from working on its financial advisory, strategic planning and long-term facilities planning committees. He has useful ideas on curriculum, testing and language education.
Jacobs, as with several candidates, was drawn to the election by concerns about the $42 million, 10-year building referendum, but demonstrates flexibility, knowledge and interests that go well beyond the building issue.
Wesley Ann Polen, 37, chief operating officer in a consulting firm, wants a new school, but her criticism of how the decision was handled seems unfair. She has interesting ideas on testing, curriculum and financing methods.
Sol Bahng, 44, who is in supply-chain management, touts that he doesn't have an agenda and wants special needs students heard more.
Julie Simpson, 35, a stay-at-home mom, has the most issues with current policies on gifted students, taxation, technology and curriculum.
