When thinking about facility upgrades in the district, I look to how the best practices involving the education of students has evolved over the years due not only to the changes and availability of technology but also to the natural evolution any process experiences over time. The overarching theme I hear throughout the District is a need for large, flexible learning spaces for both student and staff. Therefore, my priority for facility upgrades would be to evaluate where these flexible learning spaces can be best utilized and facilitated within the District. There has been talk of seeking voter permission for a funding mechanism to pay for building projects without raising taxes. Is this something you support or should the district seek more money through a tax increase referendum to address building needs faster? When the District Administration prepared the four different potential funding scenarios for the Board, Forward 95 and the community forums, they clearly laid out the assumptions and anticipated spending scenarios for all four options which include the two mentioned above. I support the third option, the one that does not increase the tax rate because the timeline for both this option and option four which contemplates increasing the tax rate is four to six years. I also believe this option falls within our staff capacity and time constraints which must also be considered when making facility project decisions.Has the district done a good job in conveying information to parents on the Lake Zurich High School football team hazing situation? Please elaborate and explain if you have ideas on what could have been done differently?I believe that District Administration has done the best job possible conveying information to parents on the Lake Zurich football team incident. Administration has communicated the information to the best of their ability, providing as much transparency as possible while ensuring student privacy laws are followed and student privacy rights are respected. What should the district do in an effort to prevent a similar hazing problem in the future? The District Administration has begun the process of training the coaches, parents and student athletes about identifying hazing behaviors and how to properly respond as coaches, as parents and as student athletes. This process has begun in earnest with the football coaches, players and parents and is expanding to encompass all coaches and advisors, all students and all parents. This training is the first step in changing the overarching culture within not only the high school but throughout the District. Increased focus on social and emotional learning throughout the District will also help to create a culture in District 95 that does not engage in or allow this type of behavior. What role can and should school choice play in your district? If Congress or the state approves a voucher system or other means giving students broader choices among public and private schools, how will that affect your district? What is the appropriate response for the board of education of a public school system?District 95 is an effective and successful school district that does not have underperforming schools; therefore I do not believe school choice would play a role or affect District 95. The Board of Education should always consider potential changes to their school district when planning and budgeting so this should be considered if school choice is contemplated by either Congress or the Illinois State Legislature. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?I believe that that openness of the Forward 95 Strategic Planning process has been beneficial for the community. The ability to communicate so much information and obtain community insight and feedback has been beneficial to both the community and the District. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Pope Francis I most inspires me to imitate his Jesuit ideals, his caring and inclusiveness and his concern for the earth and its resources. What is the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?Both of my parents volunteered and led in the community. I saw how their efforts helped others and inspired me to follow in their footsteps. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?I have no need for a do-over, my experiences have made me who I am and I am happy. What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?My favorite subject in school was math; the ability to get the "right" answer using multiple methods has helped me tackle many of life's problems. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?When you see a need in your community you can fill, volunteer to do so. You will often find you receive more than you give.
