Streamwood teen charged in doughnut shop robbery

A Streamwood teen was ordered held on $100,000 bail Wednesday on charges he held up a Hoffman Estates doughnut shop earlier this month.

Julian Gonzalez, 18, was charged with aggravated robbery after, prosecutors say, he entered a doughnut shop on the 1100 block of Barrington Road about 11:30 p.m. Feb. 4.

Gonzalez approached the employee, displayed what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun and demanded money from the cash register, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Mennie.

The employee turned over the cash drawer containing about $300. The exchange was captured on video surveillance, which led investigators to Gonzalez, who was identified by the employee in a photo lineup, Mennie said.

After his arrest Tuesday, Gonzalez told police the weapon was a black plastic BB gun, Mennie said.

If convicted, Gonzalez faces up to 12 years in prison. He next appears in court on March 16.
