MLA encourages citizens to run for municipal positions
Minority Leadership Alliance (MLA), a non-partisan, non-racial, and non-denominational grassroots political awareness organization, wants citizens to participate in the upcoming municipal elections, scheduled for April 4, 2017.
MLA aims to encourage, promote, recruit, train, and help people to run for public offices and get appointed on various governmental commissions, boards, and committees. Furthermore, it also encourages activists to support other candidates of their choice. In the beginning, MLA would help out candidates of collar counties.
"We want to create a level playing field for common people so they feel empowered and dare to step up to the decision-making dining table, which is full of elite self-invited recurrent guests," said Moon Khan, founding president of MLA, a former candidate for DuPage County Recorder, and a former York Township trustee.
According to Khaja Moinuddin, executive vice president of MLA and recently appointed Hanover Township trustee and Streamwood Library trustee, "MLA's goal will be to enhance the candidates' skills, provide strategies, connect them with the activists of the candidates' neighborhood, and provide other in-kind helps."
"MLA believes that everybody should not start from scratches. MLA team has enough skills and acquired knowledge that can help beginners," added Dr. Ashraf Toor, one of the patrons of MLA.
Positions are available at city, library, park, school, community college, and township levels. Those who want to run should go on the websites of their municipalities, parks, libraries, school, and townships and find out vacancies. Besides, candidates should develop and select position of their choice and capacity.
To help the candidates, MLA is holding a public meeting on Sunday, December 4th between 2 pm at 4 pm at Lal Qila Restaurant 123 E St Charles Road, Villa Park, IL 6018. Refreshments will be provided. The program is open to public.
Due to MLA's initiative, so far, about a dozen candidates have already decided to run. Later, MLA wants to organize one or a series of candidates' forum and workshops to create elective political awareness.
The deadline to apply is only three weeks away. Candidates should speed up their decisions and pickup packages from village halls and respective offices that will have vacancies.
For township positions, which are filled on party basis, the deadline is December 6th. Candidates are advised to visit the websites of their political party and obtain more information.
