Electoral College might serve Illinois well

As usual, after a presidential election, the concept of an Electoral College for the election of the president comes under fire with the argument that the popular vote should be the determining factor.

It was a brilliant tool provided by our constitution writers to prevent a political party in a "true democracy" from gaining a never ending control over elections. However, this is exactly the situation we have in Illinois.

In this most recent election, 91 of our 102 counties voted Republican, but as usual, Cook County and most of its collar counties prevailed. This illustrates neatly why the Electoral College method used in federal elections is so important. Would that we had a similar system in Illinois.
