Bears' Adams looks forward to opportunity to start in place of Massie

Starting offensive right tackle Bobby Massie remained out of practice Friday and in concussion protocol, so Mike Adams is expected to start Sunday against the Giants.

Adams replaced Massie when he was injured in the second quarter against the Bucs last week. It was Adams' first game action on offense since 2014, although he has played on special teams for the Bears in every game this season.

"It felt good," the 6-foot-7, 323-pound Adams said. "It was nice to get in the action and get to be on the field with the guys. I'm looking forward to the opportunity this week. Wishing Bobby well, obviously. He's one of my brothers; hope he heals up. But I plan on going in and taking advantage of the opportunity."

Originally a second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012, Adams started 20 games and played in 41 for them. But he missed the 2015 season after having back surgery and was released in May. Three months later he signed with the Bears.

"He stepped in last week against Tampa on not much notice and didn't stick out," coach John Fox said. "In that situation, that's a good thing. He's big, he's long, he's got really long arm length. He's smart. He's adapted to what we're doing pretty quickly."

Adams believes getting a full week of practice with the first team will benefit him on Sunday.

"It definitely helps when you get the reps, as opposed to just watching them on tape and getting mental reps," he said. "But you can prepare well all week and then go out and lay an egg. It's all about executing on Sunday."

First things first:

In his 30-year NFL coaching career, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is relatively certain he's been through times as trying as those the Bears currently face with multiple injuries to starters and the suspension of Alshon Jeffery.

Fangio just knows one way to respond, and that's what he'll be preaching as the Bears hit the road to face the 6-3 Giants.

"I'm sure it happened somewhere along the line," Fangio said. "But the only thing you can do is look at every game as a one-game opportunity. We've got a chance to go to New York, go with whoever we've got and give it our best shot and play good.

"Even if we were 7-2 vs. 2-7, I wouldn't be thinking about playoffs ramifications, or this game, that game. I'm a one-game-at-a-time guy, one-series-at-a-time guy, one-play-at-a-time guy. I try to instill that in the players, and then we see what happens after that. We're not gonna get caught up in the highs and the lows of this profession."

Injury update: In addition to tackle Bobby Massie (concussion), defensive lineman Mitch Unrein (back) and cornerback Deiondre' Hall (ankle) did not practice and are doubtful for Sunday.

Wide receivers Eddie Royal (toe) and Marquess Wilson (foot), nose tackle Eddie Goldman (ankle), guard Josh Sitton (ankle), outside linebackers Pernell McPhee (knee) and Willie Young (ankle), and cornerbacks Bryce Callahan (hamstring) and Tracy Porter (knee) were limited and are questionable.

In his first game back last week after missing six games with a sprained left ankle, Goldman tweaked the same ankle and was unable to finish. With Unrein not expected to play and backup nose tackle Will Sutton (ankle) on injured reserve, Goldman's presence is crucial on a depleted D-line.

"He did even better than I thought he would coming off the (injury), and then he nicked it late in the game (and it) was a setback," defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. "But prior to that point he did well."

It was suggested to Fangio that without Goldman the Bears would be in a quandary at nose tackle.

"I kind of know what the word means," Fangio said. "It is a quandary."

For the Giants, starting guard Justin Pugh (knee) is out.
