Trump's genius was appeal to economically frustrated
I was very disappointed and stunned to see Donald Trump win the election. How can we be that stupid?
I am a scientist. In science the prevailing ethic is to be very honest and objective with facts and evidence, to avoid deception and the influence of emotion and personality in reaching conclusions. Such is not the prevailing ethic in political life. In politics one seeks to gain power and exert control on matters of public policy. Winning and holding power is key, and truth is, well, nice to have on your side, but not as important as winning.
More than 200 newspapers gave endorsements for Hillary Clinton while there were only 20 for Donald Trump, Did that not matter? This newspaper made an excellent presidential endorsement with pros and cons for both candidates,
However, a presidential election is a bit like using a five-pound hammer to fix a watch - a tool without finesse. You choose a candidate with the hope they may address one or two of your key issues.
The key to Trump's victory was his appeal to the blue-collar working class, whose economic standard has fallen or stagnated for decades. Jobs have been lost due to globalization and use of digital technology. Over time the US economy has grown, but the gains have been realized mostly for those with higher incomes. Trump's appeal to this economically frustrated class was his genius. Many people voted for him in spite of his despicable attitudes toward women and minorities, which were not their primary concerns.
I hope that Trump finds the understanding, compassion, and wisdom to lead the country.
