High schools: College signatures from Miles, Gavars, Stack
Sarah Miles, a senior student at Hoffman Estates, has signed a national letter of intent to swim at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio. Miles plans to major in physical therapy.
The 17-year-old Miles swims for the Palatine Park District's Tiger Sharks swim team. She specializes in the 200- and 100-yard backstroke, the 400 individual medley and freestyle events.
She also has competed in the medley and freestyle relays for PPD. Last summer, Miles was part of state-championship relays for PPD in the 400 free and 800 free at the senior championship meet at the University of Chicago.
In March, she swam for PPD on the 800 free relay in Orlando, Fla., in the NCSA junior national meet.
Gavars signs with Bucknell: Barrington senior Mitch Gavars, a top achiever in both swimming and water polo, has committed to a collegiate swimming future at Bucknell University.
A three-time high school state meet qualifier in the 500-yard freestyle, Gavars is the two-time defending champion in that race in the Mid-Suburban League's conference meet.
He also was a key player on the Barrington's boys water polo team which advanced to the state Elite Eight in 2015.
Gavars has also excelled in the classroom and has earned a spot on USA Swimming's Scholastic All-American team the last two years.
Stack signs with NC-Asheville: Barrington girls volleyball standout Cecilia Stack has signed a letter of intent to play NCAA Division I volleyball at North Carolina-Asheville. Stack, who earned all-conference honors in the Mid-Suburban League and all-area acclaim from the Daily Herald, has left quite an impression with Fillies volleyball coach Michele Jakubowski. "Cecilia is a leader on and off the court," Jakubowski said. "She is an awesome force at the net and will be a great addition to the Bulldog volleyball program."
