Bears place Long on IR, effectively ending his season
The Bears' run of good health lasted less than a week.
After their bye, John Fox's team went into Tampa for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers as healthy as it had been all season.
It came out missing Kyle Long, the only offensive lineman in franchise history to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons. Long was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury that will keep him out the remainder of the season.
The Bears also placed defensive lineman Will Sutton on injured reserve, also with an ankle injury from the Bucs game. Sutton started six of seven games, including Sunday, at nose tackle in place of Eddie Goldman, who was out with a high-ankle sprain. Goldman returned against the Bucs but suffered another ankle injury, although the severity of that isn't known.
Long was injured in the second quarter Sunday and left the field on a cart. He was replaced by seven-year veteran Ted Larsen, who also started in his place in the previous game when Long was sidelined by a triceps injury. Long had also been playing all season with a shoulder injury that may require surgery.
"Tough stretch for him, battling through some things," Bears tight end Zach Miller said. "The guy shows a ton of toughness. He's a cornerstone of what we do."
The Bears added wide receiver Marquess Wilson to the 53-man roster, activating him from the physically-unable-to-perform list, where he had been since summer minicamp with a fractured left foot. Wilson had 28 receptions for 464 yards (16.6-yard average) last season. He is expected to help pick up the slack left by the four-game suspension that Alshon Jeffery received Monday for using performance-enhancing drugs.
To add depth on the offensive line, the Bears promoted Cornelius Edison from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. He appeared in one game earlier this season. To fortify their D-line, the Bears signed six-year veteran defensive lineman C.J. Wilson.
Quarterback Josh Woodrum and offensive lineman Cyril Richardson were signed to the practice squad.
