A Palatine woman was killed last night in a house fire. Palatine Fire Department Deputy Chief Patrick Gratzianna said firefighters responded to a resident's call of a house fire on the 300 block of Slade Street about 7:30 p.m., and rescuers arrived within five minutes. Full story.

Geneva man dies after vehicle veers off road, police say

A Geneva man died yesterday afternoon after the truck he was driving veered off the road and hit a parked semitrailer truck in St. Charles, police say. Alcohol may have been a factor, police say, after they were called just after 2 p.m. to the 37000 block of Stern Avenue for a crash that happened in a parking lot of a business. Full story.

Unattended barbecue pit blamed for Waukegan restaurant fire

Burning charcoal that grew too hot in the barbecue pit at Hillery's Bar-BQ is to blame for a fire there that has shut down the Waukegan restaurant, fire officials say. Waukegan firefighters were called at about 9:30 a.m. yesterday to the restaurant, 2021 N. Lewis Lane, and arrived to discover fire in the BBQ pit and heavy flames coming out of the chimney. Racially charged graffiti sparks meeting, protest at Warren High

Minority students organized what became a large indoor group meeting and a protest outside yesterday in reaction to a "White's Only" message scrawled on a bathroom door at Warren Township High School's junior-senior campus in Gurnee. John Ahlgrim, superintendent of Gurnee-based Warren District 121, said 150 to 200 students gathered in a hallway near the Almond Road campus library to discuss diversity and respect. Full story.

Former owner of Naperville's Hollywood Palms theater sentenced to 5 years

The former owner of the Hollywood Palms cinema in Naperville and the Hollywood Blvd. movie theater in Woodridge is off to prison for cheating the government out of millions of dollars. DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin sentenced Edwin C. "Ted" Bulthaup, 59, of Woodridge to five years in prison for sales tax evasion and four years in prison for banking institution fraud. Add about 10 percent to cost of pop; Cook County OKs soda tax

The Cook County Board of Commissioners yesterday narrowly passed a 1-cent-per-ounce tax on sweetened beverages, but only after Board President Toni Preckwinkle came in at the last minute to cast a tiebreaking vote, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Full story.

Dwyane Wade got a win in his return to Miami, with Jimmy Butler scoring 20 points and Rajon Rondo adding 16 points and 12 assists as the Chicago Bulls topped the Heat 98-95 last night.
