Girls volleyball: Schaumburg Christian in sectional final

In only its second year in IHSA state competition, Schaumburg Christian's girls volleyball team is headed to a Class 1A sectional championship.

The Lady Conquerors defeated St. Benedict College Prep of Chicago 25-16, 25-19 and will face Faith Lutheran of Crystal Lake in Thursday's title match of the Westminster Christian sectional.

Faith Lutheran topped Chicago Morgan Park Academy in the first semifinal 25-16, 25-19.

The Conquerors were led in Set 1 by Bailey Cummings (8 kills, 3 blocks) and senior Courtney Benson (4 kills). Sophomore Nikki Toth had 4 digs.

Schaumburg Christian started out leading the first set 4-0 on serves by junior Veronica Woods and led by as much as 22-13.

St. Benedict got to within 22-16 before the Conquerors closed it out on three straight kills (two by Cummings one by Benson).

St. Benedict led 13-7 in the second set when Schaumburg Christian coach Alice Cummings called for a timeout. Toth reeled off 13 straight serves to give the Conquerors a 20-13 lead.

With senior Jordan Lempa handling the setting, Cummings had 7 kills in the second set and Benson added 4 kills.

Lempa set Cummings for 3 straight kills to close out the match.
